    In the United States 84 colleges now accept just women. Most of them were established in the 19th century， and they were designed to offer women the education they could not receive anywhere else. At that time most universities and colleges accepted only men. In the past 20 years many young women have chosen to study at colleges that accept both men and women. As a result，some women’s colleges decided to accept men students too. Others， however， refused to change. Now these schools are popular again.
    The president of Trinity Washington University in Washington D. C. says that by the end of the 1980s women began to recognize that studying at the same school with men did not mean women were having an equal chance to learn. The president of Smith College in Massachusetts says a women’s college permits women to choose classes and activities freely. For example，she says that in a women’s college a higher percentage of students studied mathematics than in a college with both men and women.
    Educational experts say men students in the United States usually speak in class more than women students do. In a women’s college， women feel free to say what they think. Women’s schools also bring out leadership capabilities in many women. Women are represented everywhere. For example， at a women，s college a woman holds every governing office. Recent studies reportedly show that this leadership continues after college. The studies show American women who went to women’s colleges are more likely to hold successful jobs later in life.

    The freezing Northeast hasn’t been a terribly fun place to spend time in winter，so when the chance came for a weekend to Sarasota， Florida， my bags were packed before you could say “sunshine”. I left for the land of warmth and vitamin C， thinking of beaches and orange trees. When we approached blue skies and warm air， I sent up a small prayer of gratefulness. Swimming pools，wine tasting，and pink sunsets ( at normal evening hours，not 4 in the afternoon) filled the weekend， but the best part-particularly to my taste， wasa 7 a. m. exploration to the Sarasota farmers，market that proved to be well worth the early wake-up call.
    The market， which wasfounded in 1979， sets up its tents every Saturday from 7 a. m. to 1 p. m.，rain or shine， along North Lemon Avenue and State Street. Baskets of perfect red strawberries， the red-painted sides of the Java Dawg coffee truck， and most of all， the amazing， large， soft and round red tomatoes.
    I ‘ve refused to buy winter tomatoes for years. No matter how attractive they look in the store， once I get them home they’ re unfailingly dry， hard and tasteless. But I homed in， with uncertainty， on one particular table at the Brown’s Grove Farm’s stand， full of fresh and soft tomatoes. At that moment I realized that the best part of Sarasota in winter wasgoing to be eating things that back home in New York I wouldn’ t experience again for months.
    Delighted as I wasby the tomatoes in sight， my happiness deepened when I learned that Brown’s Grove Farm is one of the suppliers for Jack Dusty， a newly opened restaurant at the
    Sarasota Ritz-Carlton， where luckily for me I was planning to have dinner that very night. Without even seeing the menu，I knew I ‘d be ordering every tomato on it.

    It pays to be smart， but we are not all smart in the same way. You may be a talented musician，but you might not be a good reader. Each of us is different.
Psychologists disagree about what is intelligence and what are talents or personal abilities. Psychologists have two different views on intelligence. Some believe there is one kind of general intelligence. Others believe there are many different kinds of intelligence.
    Some psychologists say there is one type of intelligence that can be measured with IQ tests. These psychologists support their view with research that concludes that people who do well on one kind of test for mental ability do well on other tests. They do well on tests using words， numbers or pictures. They do well on individual or group tests， and written or oral tests. Those who do poorly on one test do the same on all tests.
    Studies of the brain show that there is a biological basis for general intelligence. The brains of intelligent people use less energy during problem solving. The brain waves of people with higher intelligence show a quicker reaction. Some researchers conclude that differences in intelligence result from differences in the speed and effectiveness of information processing by the brain.
    Howard Gardner， a psychologist at the Harvard Graduate School of Education， has four children. He believes that all children are different and shouldn’t be tested by one intelligence test. Although Gardner believes general intelligence exists，he doesn ‘ t think it tells much about the talents of a person outside of formal schooling. He thinks that the human mind has different kinds of intelligence. These kinds of intelligence allow us to solve various kinds of problems we are presented with in life. Each of us has different abilities within these kinds of intelligence. Gardner believes that the purpose of school should be to encourage development of all of our intelligence.
    Gardner says that his theory is based on biology. For example， when one part of the brain is injured，other parts of the brain still work. People who cannot talk because of brain damage can still sing. So， there is not just one kind of intelligence to lose.

    “ There is a senseless notion that children grow up and leave home when they’re 18，and the truth is far from that，”says sociologist Larry Bumpass of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Today， unexpected numbers of young adults are living with their parents. “There is a major shift in the middle class”，declares sociologist Allan Schnaiberg of Northwestern University， whose son， 19， moved back in after an absence of eight months.
    Analysts cite (列举)a variety of reasons for this return to the nest. The marriage age is rising， a condition that makes home and its pleasantness particularly attractive to young people. A high divorce rate and a declining remarriage rate are sending economically pressed and emotionally hurt survivors back to parental shelters. For some， the expense of an away-from-home college education has become so excessively great that many students now attend local schools. Even after graduation， young people find their wings clipped by skyrocketing housing costs.
Living at home， says Knighton， a schoolteacher， continues to give her security and moral support. Her mother agreed， ‘‘It’s ridiculous for the kids to pay all that money for rent. It makes sense for kids to stay at home. ” But sharing the family home requires adjustments for all. There are the hassles over bathrooms， telephones and privacy. Some families， however， manage the delicate balancing act. But for others，it proves too difficult. Michelle，24，has been home three times and left three times. “What I considered a social drink， my dad considered an alcohol problem，” she explains. “He never liked anyone I dated(约会)，so I either had to hide away or meet them at friends ‘ house. ”
    Just how long should adult children live with their parents before moving on? Most psychologists feel lengthy (漫长的)homecomings are a mistake. Children， struggling to establish separate identities， can end up with “a sense of inadequacy， defeat and failure”. And aging parents， who should be enjoying some financial and personal freedom， find themselves stuck with responsibilities. Many agree that brief visits， however， can work beneficially.
