Directions : In this section,there are four passages,each of which is followed by five questions or unfinished statements. Choose the best answer and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.
Passage 1
    Artificial Intelligence( AI) is the ability of a computer program or a machine. The computer or the machine with AI can think and learn. It is also a field of study that tries to make computers “smart”. John McCarthy, a scientist, came up with the name “artificial intelligence” over 60 years ago. Many things such as learning and problem-solving can be done by computers,though not in the same way as people do.
    An unusual goal of AI research is to create special computer programs. They can learn, solve problems and think logically. At present, AI can successfully understand human speech, recognize human faces, operate self-driving cars and compete in some game systems like playing chess. However, some people consider AI a danger to humans if it develops too quickly. A famous British scientist wasalso not for this kind of technology.
    Math is the basic language of AI. If students are good at math , they will be more likely to become successful AI designers in the future. We need not only bright students but also average students. As for average students,if they get enough math skills,they can also become successful AI designers. Besides,a good knowledge of computer science is also necessary for AI designing.
    Scientists hope to create creative and emotional AI. The AI can possibly understand human feelings or create art. Many ways and tools have been tried to discover this wide and exciting field.
* 31. From Paragraph 1,we know that .
* 32. According to the passage,what can’t AI do at present?

Passage 2
    There are many ways to help improve your health like eating healthy food,taking exercise and getting medical help. But the easiest and cheapest way to improve your health is just to sleep eight hours or more every night. The general sleeping rule is that the younger you are, the longer sleep you need. But regardless of age, some people need to sleep more while for some a few hours is enough.
    The problem of sleep is that more and more people in the world are not sleeping enough. According to the World Health Organization,over half the people in the world may be sleep-deprived. Having less sleep not only makes people feel tired but also causes accidents. In the United States alone, sleepy drivers cause at least 100,000 traffic accidents a year. Sleep problems can also cause medical problems such as high blood pressure.
    Why are so many people sleep-deprived? Part of the reasons may be cultural. In the American culture,people put a higher value on work than on sleep. In fact, people who sleep a lot are usually seen as “lazy”. Moreover, you can sometimes hear some people say proudly that they don’t have much time to sleep and they only sleep four or five hours a night. It seems that the less you sleep, the more work you’ ll do.
    How do we teach these people to learn the value of sleep? Perhaps they may listen to the advice of Dr. James Maas, an expert in sleep. He says, “Sleep is like a credit card. When you sleep less, you are only borrowing time. You always have to pay it back. The more hours you don’t sleep, the more hours you should sleep to ‘ pay back’the hours on your ‘ sleep credit card’”.
    For those who value work more than sleep, they should listen to what a famous person once said,“ Don ‘ t think you will be doing less work because you sleep during the night. That is a foolish idea which is held by people who have no imagination. You will be able to do more. ”
* 36. According to the author, the easiest and cheapest way to improve health is to__________________.
* 37. What does “sleep-deprived” mean in Paragraph 2?
* 38. According to Dr. James Maas, what is sleep like?

Passage 3
    My husband and I got married in 1991 and for the first ten years of our marriage I wasvery happy to stay at home and raise our three children. Then four years ago,our youngest child went to school and I thought I might go back to work.
My husband wasvery supportive and helped me to make my decision. He emphasized all of the things I can do around the house, and said he thought I could be a great success in business.
    After several weeks of looking for a job,I found my present job,which is working for a small public relations firm. At first, my husband wasvery proud of me and would tell his friends, “My clever little wife can run that company she ‘ s working for.”
    But as his joking statement approached the truth,my husband stopped talking to me about my job. I have received several promotions and pay increases, and I’ m now making more money than he is. I can buy my own clothes and a new car. Because of our joint incomes,my husband and I can do so many things we had always dreamed of doing, but we don’t do these things because he is very unhappy.
We fight about little things and my husband is very critical of me in front of our friends. For the first time in our marriage,I think it is possible that our marriage may come to an end.
    I love my husband very much, and I don’t want him to feel inferior, but I also love my job. I think I can be a good wife and a working woman,but I don’t know how. Who can give me some advice? Will I choose one or the other or can I keep both my husband and my new career?

Passage 4
    Do parents owe their children anything? Yes , they owe them a great deal.
One of their chief duties is to give their children a sense of personal worth,for self-esteem is the basis of good mental health. A youngster who is often made to feel stupid,often compared to brighter brothers,sisters or cousins,will not feel confident and become so afraid of failing that he (or she) won’t try at all. Of course, they should be corrected when they do wrong, which is the way children learn. But the criticisms should be balanced with praises.
    Parents owe their children firm guidance. It is frightening for a youngster to feel that he is in charge of himself; it,s like being in a car without brakes. The parents who say “No” when other parents say “Yes” send a double message. They are also saying, “We love you, and we are ready to risk your anger, because we don’t want you to get into trouble. ”
    Parents owe their children a correct feeling about their body,and enough information about sex to balance the wrong information that they will surely receive from their friends.
    Parents owe their children privacy and respect for their personal things. This means not borrowing things without being permitted, not reading diaries or mail, not looking through wallets,pockets or drawers. If a mother feels that she must read her daughter9 s diary to know what is going on, the communication between them must be pretty bad.
    Parents owe their children a set of solid values around which to build their lives. This means teaching them to respect the rights and opinions of others ; it means respecting elders,teachers,and the law. The best way to teach such values is by example. A child who is lied to will lie. A child who sees his parents steal tools from the factory or towels from a hotel will think that it is all right to steal. A youngster who sees no laughter and no love in the home will have a difficult time laughing and loving.
    No child asks to be born. If you bring a life into the world, you owe the child something. And if you give him his due, he’ ll have something of value to pass down to your grandchildren.
* 46. According to the passage, parents owe their children the following things EXCEPT .
* 47. The author thinks that teenagers are frightened when they are in charge of themselves because________.
